Don't rely on laboratories taking your attenuators in for calibration ending up testing 2 wavelengths and 2 power levels then tell you all is good. Attenuators and power meters many times have linearity problems meaning that they don't attenuate or read flatly accross their range. All power meter detectors have varying sensitivity to the different wavelengths they receive. Repeatability might also be a problem. This means that when you request an attenuation level based on an incoming power level, and repeat that request, your attenuator might not be giving you exactly the same attenuation level time and again. A lab must spend a fair amount of time to check such specification at many power levels and many wavelength. We do!. Power meters must also be checked at different wavelengths and different power levels to prove their accuracy.
