Non-Intrusive Optical Traffic Identification

The primary function of the Jonard OFI-100 is to determine whether an optical fiber is carrying traffic and identify the direction of that traffic without disconnecting or cutting the fiber. This capability is valuable when technicians are working with active network infrastructure and need additional information before beginning maintenance.

The fiber is positioned in the appropriate adapter channel, and the instrument detects light present in the fiber. The colour display indicates the direction of the optical signal and provides a relative core-power reading. This information helps technicians distinguish active fibers from inactive fibers and understand the direction in which the detected signal is travelling.

As with any fiber identification procedure, the correct adapter channel must be used for the fiber diameter and construction. The fiber should be clean, undamaged and positioned according to the manufacturer’s operating instructions.

Modulated Signal and Tone Detection

The OFI-100 identifies continuous-wave signals as well as modulated signals at 270 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz. These standard test tones are commonly used during fiber identification and tracing procedures.

When a compatible modulated signal is detected, the instrument displays the identified frequency and provides an audible warning. This allows one technician to introduce a selected tone at one end of a link while another technician identifies the corresponding fiber at a remote location.

Clear Colour Display

The integrated LCD presents the information required during a fiber identification procedure in an easy-to-read format. The display indicates relative core power, optical signal direction, detected modulation frequency and battery status.

A visual direction indicator helps technicians quickly understand whether light is travelling from left to right or from right to left through the instrument. The battery indicator also allows the technician to monitor the two AA batteries before beginning field testing.

Reversible Fiber Adapter

The Jonard OFI-100 includes a reversible adapter for four common fiber and cable sizes. One side supports 2 mm and 3 mm jacketed fiber optic cables, while the opposite side supports 250 µm bare fiber and 900 µm buffered fiber.

Selecting the correct adapter position is important for obtaining a valid identification result and avoiding unnecessary pressure on the fiber. The technician should confirm the fiber diameter before placing the cable into the instrument. The adapter and contact surfaces should also be kept clean to support repeatable operation.

Built-In Optical Power Meter

The built-in optical power meter provides additional measurement capability for fiber installation and maintenance. Technicians can use this function to evaluate optical signal levels without relying on a separate power meter for basic field measurements.

The appropriate wavelength, connector interface and measurement procedure should be selected before testing. Optical connectors must be inspected and cleaned before connection because contamination can affect measurement results and may damage the connected interfaces.

Built-In Visual Fault Locator

The integrated visual fault locator uses a Class 3R laser diode with a stated output range from 1 to 5 mW. Visible red light can assist with continuity verification and the location of certain breaks, excessive bends or poor connections in compatible fiber links.

The visual fault locator should only be activated after the fiber path and connector have been checked. Never look directly into the VFL port, an active connector or the end of a connected fiber. Suitable laser safety procedures must be followed whenever the visual fault locator is operating.

The OFI-100 is protected by a rubber sleeve that helps reduce damage from accidental drops and everyday field handling. Its compact dimensions and weight of approximately 268 g make it convenient to carry during fiber installation and maintenance work.
