Description

Jonard OTDR-1000 Multi-Function Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer

The Jonard OTDR-1000 Multi-Function Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer is an all-in-one handheld instrument for evaluating fiber optic and network cabling. Designed for FTTx construction, access network installation, maintenance and troubleshooting, the instrument combines eight testing functions in a compact and durable platform.

The tester can map single-mode optical fibers, identify fiber breakpoints, measure cable length and evaluate relative optical power loss. In addition to its OTDR capabilities, the instrument includes event mapping, an optical power meter, a visual fault locator, an optical light source, an RJ45 cable length measurement function, a cable tracker and an RJ45 sequence tester.

A bright 3.5-inch colour LCD presents trace information, event data and measurement results in a portable format. The rubberized hard-plastic enclosure is designed for demanding field use, while the built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery supports extended testing away from an external power source.

Eight Integrated Fiber and Network Testing Functions

Function Purpose
Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer Maps fiber optic cables and identifies the location of events or faults that may affect network performance.
Event Map Provides an easy-to-understand representation of detected events and individual component loss values.
Optical Power Meter Measures relative optical power in fiber optic cables.
Visual Fault Locator Uses visible red light to assist with locating faults, breaks and continuity problems.
Optical Light Source Provides a stable optical source for use with the integrated or a compatible optical power meter.
RJ45 Cable Length Measurement Measures the length of compatible network cables over a range of up to 300 metres.
Cable Tracker Helps track and trace terminated network cables.
RJ45 Sequence Tester Tests continuity and conductor sequence in CAT5/e and CAT6/e connectorized network cables.

OTDR Testing and Event Mapping

The OTDR function launches an optical pulse into the fiber and evaluates returned signals to produce a trace of the link. This information helps technicians identify events along the cable, determine their approximate locations and evaluate losses that may affect network performance.

The instrument operates at 1310 nm and 1550 nm for testing G.652 single-mode fiber. Its stated test range extends from 500 metres to 60 kilometres, with dynamic ranges of 24 dB at 1310 nm and 22 dB at 1550 nm. Available pulse widths range from 3 ns to 10 µs, allowing the measurement configuration to be adapted to different link lengths.

For users who prefer a simplified presentation, the event map displays detected events in an accessible format and provides individual loss values. This can help field technicians interpret a fiber link without relying exclusively on the full OTDR trace.

Integrated Optical Power Meter

The integrated optical power meter covers wavelengths from 800 to 1700 nm and provides a stated measurement range from -50 to +26 dBm. Selectable calibration wavelengths include 850, 980, 1300, 1310, 1490, 1550, 1625 and 1650 nm.

The meter also supports frequency identification for continuous-wave, 270 Hz, 330 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz signals. Its universal interface supports FC, SC and ST connector formats, helping technicians perform relative power measurements across commonly used fiber optic systems.

Optical Light Source and Visual Fault Locator

The optical light source provides stable output for use with an optical power meter during fiber loss testing. Available output configurations include 1550 nm or dual-wavelength 1310/1550 nm operation, depending on the instrument configuration. The light source supports continuous-wave and modulated output at 270 Hz, 330 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz.

The integrated visual fault locator operates at 650 nm and provides at least 10 mW of output power. Continuous-wave, 1 Hz and 2 Hz modes are available. Visible red light can help technicians identify breaks, excessive bends, poor connections and continuity problems in compatible fiber links. Appropriate laser safety procedures must be followed during use.

RJ45 Network Cable Testing

In addition to fiber optic testing, the Jonard multi-function tester includes several functions for copper network cable maintenance. The RJ45 cable length measurement tool supports distances up to 300 metres, while the cable tracker assists with tracing terminated network cables.

The integrated RJ45 sequence tester evaluates continuity and conductor sequence in CAT5/e and CAT6/e network cables. These functions allow fiber optic and network technicians to carry one instrument for several common installation and troubleshooting procedures.

Portable Design and Data Management

The bright 3.5-inch colour LCD provides a clear interface for examining traces, event maps and measurement results. At approximately 173 × 82 × 37 mm and no more than 350 g, the tester is compact enough for portable field use.

The instrument includes at least 600 internal storage positions and supports external storage using a TF card. OTDR results use the SOR standard file format, supporting the transfer and review of test data. A Micro-USB interface allows the instrument to be charged or connected to a computer for data transfer.

The rechargeable 3.7 V, 4000 mAh lithium-polymer battery provides a stated standby time exceeding 20 hours and measurement time exceeding 12 hours. The supplied power adapter is rated for 5 VDC at 2 A.
