Description

AFL Noyes OPM5 Optical Power Meter with Data Storage

The AFL Noyes OPM5 Optical Power Meter with Data Storage is a rugged handheld instrument for measuring optical power and link loss in single-mode and multimode fiber networks. Available with filtered InGaAs, InGaAs, or germanium detectors, the OPM5 supports applications ranging from premises LAN/WAN testing to telecommunications, Passive Optical Networks, CATV, and DWDM systems.

The OPM5 stores optical references at each calibrated wavelength and organizes test results into multiple files. Stored results can be transferred through USB to AFL TRM 2.0 software for analysis, Pass/Fail evaluation, reporting, and printing. This provides technicians with a practical method for documenting optical loss measurements and demonstrating compliance with applicable network limits.

Wave ID and Multi-Wavelength Testing

When paired with a compatible AFL Wave ID optical light source, the OPM5 can identify up to three transmitted wavelengths simultaneously. The meter automatically detects the incoming encoded wavelengths and applies the corresponding calibration settings, helping reduce test time and wavelength-selection errors.

  • Data storage: Stores optical references and measurement results for organized project documentation.
  • USB transfer: Transfers stored results to a compatible computer for analysis and reporting.
  • TRM 2.0 software: Supports result review, batch editing, Pass/Fail analysis, and report generation.
  • Wave ID: Detects up to three wavelengths simultaneously from compatible AFL light sources.
  • Multiple detector options: Available for standard telecom, premises, PON, CATV, and high-power applications.
  • Interchangeable adapters: Supports FC, SC, ST, LC, 1.25 mm universal, and 2.5 mm universal configurations.
  • Long battery life: Provides up to approximately 300 hours of operation from two AA batteries.
  • Field-ready construction: Designed to withstand a one-metre drop and includes splash-resistant controls.

OPM5 Detector Options

The OPM5-4D uses a filtered InGaAs detector and provides a measurement range from +26 to -50 dBm. It is intended for higher-power applications such as CATV broadband, Passive Optical Networks, and DWDM systems.

The OPM5-3D uses an InGaAs detector with a measurement range from +10 to -75 dBm. Its broad dynamic range is suitable for telecommunications and general single-mode network testing.

The OPM5-2D uses a germanium detector and provides a measurement range from +6 to -60 dBm. It supports premises LAN/WAN applications involving compatible single-mode or multimode fiber networks.

Optical Measurement and Reporting

Measurements can be displayed in dB, dBm, or µW with a resolution of 0.01 dB. Typical accuracy is ±0.1 dB, with a specified accuracy of ±0.25 dB under documented conditions.

The OPM5 stores test data for transfer to TRM 2.0 software. Technicians can use the software to analyze results, organize project files, generate network Pass/Fail results, illustrate available system headroom, and prepare professional reports.

The OPM5 includes the TRM 2.0 Basic License. A compatible USB-A to USB Mini-B cable connects the power meter to a computer and can also provide external power when connected to a suitable USB power source.

Rugged Design for Field Testing

The AFL Noyes OPM5 is designed for outside-plant, telecom, enterprise, data center, and field-service environments. The housing is engineered to withstand a one-metre drop, while splash-resistant controls support operation in demanding locations and can be used while wearing gloves.

The meter operates from two standard AA batteries and provides approximately 300 hours of battery life. A five-minute automatic shutoff function helps conserve power. The instrument can also accept power from a standard Mini-USB power adapter.
