Description

Fujikura 45S Active Cladding Alignment Fusion Splicer

The Fujikura 45S Active Cladding Alignment Fusion Splicer is a rugged single-fiber splicing system designed to improve preparation, loading, fusion, sleeve positioning, and heating workflows. Its compact cube-shaped enclosure, adjustable touchscreen, automated functions, and field-ready construction make it suitable for FTTx, 5G small-cell, MDF/IDF, rural broadband, installation, maintenance, and restoration applications.

The 45S introduces a simultaneous fiber preparation and loading workflow. When used with the Fujikura SS-05 Dual Fiber Stripper and a compatible CT16 or CT50 cleaver fitted with the AD-16A adapter, both fibers can be stripped and cleaved together. The patented sheath-clamp design then allows the two prepared fibers to be loaded into the splicer simultaneously.

Active Fusion Control optimizes the fusion arc for each splice, while Active Blade Management monitors cleave quality and supports compatible cleaver blade management. Automatic fiber placement correction can reposition a fiber that has been loaded past the electrode centerline, reducing unnecessary manual intervention.

Faster Simultaneous Fiber Preparation and Loading

The Fujikura 45S Fusion Splicer is designed to reduce the number of separate handling steps required during single-fiber splicing. Compatible preparation tools allow both fibers to be stripped and cleaved during the same operation before they are loaded into the splicer.

  • Simultaneous fiber preparation: Compatible stripping and cleaving tools can prepare both fibers during the same workflow.
  • Simultaneous fiber loading: The patented sheath clamps allow one prepared fiber to be loaded with each hand.
  • Automatic sheath-clamp opening: Opening the wind protector can also open both sheath clamps after the splice.
  • Automatic fiber placement correction: Repositions fibers that have been loaded beyond the electrode centerline.
  • Active Fusion Control: Optimizes the fusion arc for each splice.
  • Active Blade Management: Monitors cleave quality and supports compatible cleaver blade management.
  • Fast tube heating: Supports average heating times of 21 to 23 seconds for standard 60 mm sleeves.
  • Compact rugged construction: Designed for resistance to shock, moisture, and dust in field environments.
  • Adjustable touchscreen: Helps improve visibility in bright sunlight and challenging splicer positions.

Active Cladding Alignment for Single-Fiber Splicing

The Fujikura 45S uses active cladding alignment to position single-mode or multimode optical fibers before fusion. It supports standard fibers with an approximate cladding diameter of 125 µm.

Average splice-loss specifications include 0.03 dB for ITU-T G.652 fiber, 0.01 dB for G.651 multimode fiber, 0.05 dB for G.653 and G.655 fiber, and 0.03 dB for G.657 bend-insensitive fiber under the specified test conditions.

Actual splice loss varies according to fiber characteristics, cleave quality, connector and fiber cleanliness, environmental conditions, selected splice mode, electrode condition, and equipment maintenance.

Automatic Fiber Placement Correction

If a cleaved fiber is positioned beyond the electrode centerline, the 45S can automatically reverse the fiber to the correct location. This helps avoid a placement error that would otherwise require the operator to reopen the splicer and reposition the fiber manually.

Automatic correction supports a smoother loading process, particularly when using sheath clamps in field environments. The feature does not replace proper fiber preparation and loading. Fibers must still be clean, correctly cleaved, and positioned within the supported coating and cleave-length ranges.

Active Fusion Control and Active Blade Management

Active Fusion Control optimizes arc conditions during each splice. This helps the splicer adapt the fusion process according to observed fiber conditions and supports consistent field performance.

Active Blade Management monitors cleave quality and communicates with compatible Fujikura cleavers. When the system detects a cleave-related issue, compatible blade-management functions can help maintain the cleaver and improve preparation consistency.

Wireless functionality depends on the compatible cleaver, installed splicer configuration, communication settings, and supported software. The 45S includes Bluetooth 5.2 for compatible wireless workflows.

Mechanically Linked Sheath Clamps

The patented sheath clamps support one-handed closure while each fiber is positioned in the V-groove. After the splice is completed, opening the wind protector can automatically open both sheath clamps.

This linked operation simplifies removal of the spliced fiber and positioning of the protection sleeve. It also helps reduce the number of separate movements needed between fusion and tube heating.

The sheath-clamp configuration supports coatings or sheathing up to 3000 µm, depending on the cable construction and installed accessories. Available cleave lengths range from 5 to 16 mm for compatible 125/250 µm fiber and from 10 to 16 mm for supported 400 or 900 µm coatings.

Fiber Holder and Sheath-Clamp Operation

The 45S can be used with sheath clamps or compatible Fujikura fiber holders. Fiber-holder options support coating diameters from approximately 160 to 3000 µm, depending on the selected holder.

Compatible holders include the FH-70-250 for 250 µm single fiber, FH-70-200 for 200 µm coated fiber, FH-70-900 for 900 µm fiber, and FH-60-LT900 for selected 900 µm loose-buffer fiber. FUSEConnect holders and clamps are also available for supported connector-installation workflows.

When using fiber holders, the nominal cleave length is approximately 10 mm. Confirm the fiber holder, coating diameter, cleaver, and required cleave length before beginning the preparation process.

Fast Splicing and Protection-Sleeve Heating

The Fujikura 45S provides an average splice time of approximately 6 to 8 seconds in SM FAST mode and approximately 8 to 11 seconds in SM AUTO mode. Splice time is measured from the appearance of the fiber image on the display to the estimated splice-loss result.

The integrated tube heater supports heat-shrinkable protection sleeves up to 66 mm long and 6 mm in diameter before shrinking. Average heating time is approximately 21 to 23 seconds in standard 60 mm mode and 16 to 18 seconds in 60 mm slim mode.

Actual splice and heating times vary according to environmental conditions, fiber characteristics, sleeve type, heater mode, battery condition, and equipment usage.

Rugged and Portable Field Design

The 45S measures approximately 131 x 123 x 121 mm and weighs approximately 1.4 kg with the battery installed. Its compact format supports transportation and operation in confined cabinets, closures, pedestals, equipment rooms, aerial work areas, and remote deployment sites.

The adjustable 4.95-inch TFT touchscreen can be repositioned to reduce glare and improve visibility when the splicer is used at an unusual angle. V-groove LED illumination provides additional visibility during fiber loading.

The splicer operates from -10°C to +50°C, supports storage temperatures from -40°C to +80°C, and is rated for operation at altitudes up to 5000 m.

Battery Capacity and Data Storage

The rechargeable BTR-17 lithium-ion battery supports approximately 200 splice-and-heat cycles in standard 60 mm heating mode or approximately 230 cycles in 60 mm slim mode under the specified test conditions.

The splicer stores up to 100 splice modes, 30 heat modes, 20,000 splice results, and 100 fiber images. USB interfaces support PC communication and an external LED lamp, while compatible software allows firmware updates and parameter upload or download.
