Fujikura ARCMaster FSM-100 Series Specialty Fiber Fusion Splicers
The Fujikura ARCMaster FSM-100 Series Specialty Fiber Fusion Splicers are advanced optical fiber processing systems developed for manufacturing, laboratory, production, photonics, and research applications. The series includes the FSM-100M, FSM-100P, FSM-100M+, and FSM-100P+, providing specialized configurations for large-diameter fibers, polarization-maintaining fibers, dissimilar fibers, fiber shaping, and demanding glass-processing workflows.
ARCMaster splicers use advanced plasma-zone control to provide the flexibility required for specialty fiber fusion. Their split V-groove clamping and adjustable electrode systems allow the arc discharge area to be adapted to the fiber diameter and processing requirement. This helps the FSM-100 Series support standard telecommunications fibers, large-diameter fibers, heat-sensitive fibers, and other specialized optical fiber structures.
Depending on the selected model, the FSM-100 Series can support precision fusion splicing, polarization-maintaining fiber alignment, tapering, lens formation, glass processing, Mode Field Adapter fabrication, Tapered Fused Bundle processing, FBG applications, end-cap processing, and the splicing of fibers with different cladding diameters or mode-field diameters.
Advanced Specialty Fiber Processing with the ARCMaster FSM-100 Series
The Fujikura ARCMaster FSM-100 Series combines configurable arc control, specialized alignment methods, multiple calibration modes, fiber-profile learning, and detailed splice-loss estimation to support applications beyond conventional telecom fusion splicing.
- Advanced plasma-zone control: Adjusts fiber and electrode positioning to optimize heat distribution for standard, small-diameter, large-diameter, and heat-sensitive fibers.
- Split V-groove clamping: Supports a broad range of fiber cladding and coating diameters without routine V-groove or clamp replacement.
- Enhanced Sweep Arc: Moves the fibers through the plasma zone to improve heat distribution during dissimilar fiber splicing, tapering, and fiber shaping.
- Multiple arc-calibration methods: Supports conventional calibration, melt-back calibration, and real-time calibration based on arc-brightness observation.
- Fiber Profile Learning: Stores fiber profile and focusing information to support accurate observation and repeatable processing.
- Dual splice-loss estimation: Uses cold and warm fiber images to support detailed splice-loss evaluation.
- PM fiber alignment: The FSM-100P and FSM-100P+ support PANDA and other compatible polarization-maintaining fibers.
- EndView observation: The FSM-100M+ and FSM-100P+ include an end-face observation system for exotic and non-circular fibers.
- Programmable glass processing: Supports multi-step processes for tapering, shaping, lens formation, and other non-splicing operations.
- PC and power-meter communication: USB and GPIB interfaces support firmware, data, control, and power-meter-feedback workflows.
Plasma-Zone Control and Sweep Arc Processing
Specialty fibers often require more precise heat distribution than standard telecommunications fibers. The ARCMaster platform addresses this requirement through adjustable electrode gap, electrode offset, vertical fiber positioning, and controlled fiber movement through the plasma zone.
The FSM-100M and FSM-100P provide a Sweep Arc range of up to ±5 mm. The FSM-100M+ and FSM-100P+ extend this capability to ±18 mm and add motorized electrode oscillation. This Plasma Zone Path Modulation creates a wider and more versatile heating area for extra-large-diameter fiber splicing, tapering, and glass processing.
Three selectable arc-calibration methods help users adapt the process to different fibers. Conventional calibration supports standard fiber, melt-back calibration provides additional parameters for specialty and large-diameter fibers, and real-time calibration observes arc brightness with a fiber-brightness learning function.
Polarization-Maintaining Fiber Alignment
The FSM-100P and FSM-100P+ are designed for polarization-maintaining fiber applications. These models support fast PANDA alignment using the Profile Alignment System and Interrelation Profile Alignment for additional PM fiber types.
The FSM-100P+ also provides EndView PM fiber alignment, including the ability to align the PM fiber core. Theta rotation supports alignment of compatible non-PM large-mode-area fibers by helping align both the core and the pump guide or inner cladding.
These PM-capable configurations are suitable for photonics research, fiber laser production, sensing systems, medical applications, optical component manufacturing, and other processes requiring controlled polarization-axis alignment.
EndView Observation and Extra-Large-Diameter Fiber Processing
The FSM-100M+ and FSM-100P+ include an EndView observation system for non-circular, holey, photonic crystal, polygon-shaped, and other exotic fibers. The fiber end-face image is directed through a compatible mirror-equipped fiber holder into the observation system.
These Plus models support silica-based optical fibers with cladding diameters from 60 to 1200 µm. Their extended Z-drive travel, electrode oscillation, long Sweep Arc range, and programmable special functions make them suitable for extra-large-diameter fiber processing and advanced glass-shaping operations.
