Description

Fujikura CT-110 and CT-111 Tension-Method Fiber Cleavers

The Fujikura CT-110 and CT-111 Tension-Method Fiber Cleavers are programmable specialty fiber preparation systems designed for precision cleaving of single silica optical fibers. Both models support cladding diameters from 80 to 250 µm and coating diameters from 81 to 2000 µm, making them suitable for standard telecommunications fibers, polarization-maintaining fibers, photonic crystal fibers, and other specialty fiber constructions.

The CT-110 is designed for high-precision perpendicular cleaving, while the CT-111 adds adjustable angled-cleaving capability from approximately 0° to 15°. These capabilities support demanding fusion splicing, component manufacturing, ball-lens preparation, end-cap processing, research, and photonics production workflows.

Both cleavers use a tension-method process with digitally controlled force. Tension is automatically applied according to the selected cleave mode, helping reduce manual variation and support repeatable preparation across different fiber types and dimensions.

Precision Tension-Method Cleaving for Specialty Fibers

The Fujikura CT-110 and CT-111 combine digitally controlled tension, motorized blade positioning, RFID fiber-holder recognition, and PC-based process management in a compact system that can operate from batteries or AC power.

  • Wide fiber range: Supports compatible single silica fibers with cladding diameters from 80 to 250 µm.
  • Broad coating support: Accommodates coating diameters from 81 to 2000 µm with the correct fiber holder and setup.
  • Digitally controlled tension: Provides a programmable tension range from 0 to 900 gf.
  • Motorized blade indexing: Automatically advances the blade without manual disassembly or blade-position adjustment.
  • Extended blade life: The 20-position blade supports an estimated total of approximately 200,000 cleaves under specified conditions.
  • RFID holder recognition: Identifies compatible FH-110 Series fiber holders and automatically selects the paired cleave mode.
  • PC software support: Enables cleave-mode editing, blade management, fiber-holder pairing, parameter transfer, and firmware updates.
  • Cordless operation: Four AA batteries provide portable operation for approximately 250 standard cleaves under specified conditions.
  • Angled cleaving: The CT-111 supports adjustable cleave angles from approximately 0° to 15°.

CT-110 Precision Perpendicular Fiber Cleaving

The Fujikura CT-110 is designed for precision tension-method cleaving where a nominally perpendicular fiber end-face is required. For supported 125 µm cladding fiber, the specified average cleave angle is approximately 0.3° under controlled measurement conditions.

The CT-110 is suitable for standard and specialty fiber applications where repeatable cleave geometry is required before fusion splicing, end-cap attachment, component assembly, or additional glass processing.

The actual cleave angle depends on the fiber type, cladding diameter, coating construction, blade condition, selected tension, clamp position, cleanliness, operating technique, and environmental conditions. Cleave performance should be verified using an appropriate inspection or interferometric measurement system when required by the application.

CT-111 Adjustable Angled Fiber Cleaving

The Fujikura CT-111 Tension-Method Angled Fiber Cleaver provides the same fundamental fiber range and process-management features as the CT-110 while adding adjustable angled-cleaving capability from approximately 0° to 15°.

Angled fiber end-faces can be required for applications where optical back-reflection must be controlled or where the fiber geometry must match a component, termination, lens, or specialty assembly. The required angle should be established according to the optical and mechanical design of the finished component.

Maximum achievable angle and cleave quality vary according to fiber type, cladding diameter, coating construction, clamp position, tension, blade condition, and preparation setup. Angled cleaves should be measured and validated using suitable end-face metrology equipment.

RFID Fiber Holder Recognition and Automatic Mode Selection

Both cleavers include an RFID sensor that recognizes the unique ISO 15693-compatible tag integrated into supported FH-110 Series fiber holders. The cleaver can automatically select a stored cleave mode based on the recognized holder.

Using the supplied PC software, each holder can be assigned a user-defined name and paired with a specific cleave mode. This configuration can help operators select the correct preparation parameters when moving between different fiber sizes, holders, or production processes.

RFID-based mode selection can be used as a process-control measure or as an aid during cleave-process optimization. The operator should still verify the fiber dimensions, blade condition, holder selection, clamp position, and programmed parameters before cleaving.

Motorized Blade Indexing and Blade-Life Management

The CT-110 and CT-111 use a motorized blade assembly that automatically indexes the blade to its next position when required. The operator does not need to disassemble the cleaver or manually reposition the blade during normal blade-position changes.

The blade has 20 positions and supports up to approximately 10,000 cleaves per position when cleaving supported 250 µm cladding fiber under the specified conditions. This provides an estimated total blade life of approximately 200,000 cleaves.

Actual blade life varies according to fiber type, cladding diameter, selected tension, cleanliness, environmental conditions, operating technique, and process requirements. The accompanying software displays the cleave count for each blade position to help users monitor blade utilization and schedule maintenance.

PC Software for Cleave Modes and Process Control

The CT-110 and CT-111 PC software supports cleave-mode editing, upload, download, export, fiber-holder management, blade-position records, and firmware updates through an internet-connected computer.

A USB 2.0 Mini Type-B interface connects the cleaver to the computer. USB communication and RFID functionality are unavailable during battery-powered operation, so the cleaver must be connected to the appropriate external power source when these functions are required.

PC-based mode management is useful for laboratories and production facilities processing multiple fiber types. Stored configurations can help maintain consistent settings between operators, machines, or production runs.

FH-100, FH-110, and FH-70 Fiber Holder Compatibility

The cleavers support compatible Fujikura FH-100 and FH-110 Series fiber holders. FH-110 holders provide RFID identification for automatic mode selection when the cleaver is operated with the required external power and communication configuration.

Optional support for FH-70 Series fiber holders is available using the AD-CT110-FH70 adapter plate. The adapter must be installed correctly before an FH-70 holder is used.

The appropriate fiber holder is selected according to the fiber coating diameter, construction, cladding diameter, process requirements, and downstream fusion splicer. The holder designation should not be selected solely from the nominal cladding diameter.

Fine Adjustment of Fiber Length After Cleaving

The CT-110 and CT-111 support fine adjustment of the coating position and total fiber length after the cleave. Total fiber length is measured from the cleaved fiber end-face to the nearest leading edge of the fiber holder.

The supported total fiber length is approximately 11 to 44 mm. This range provides flexibility for specialty fiber splicing, component assembly, end-cap installation, and other processes requiring a controlled amount of prepared fiber extending from the holder.

The required length must be confirmed against the fusion splicer, holder, fiber component, positioning system, and assembly process.

Portable Battery and AC Operation

Both cleavers can operate from four AA batteries or the supplied ADC-21 AC adapter. Battery operation supports approximately 250 cleaves of standard 125 µm cladding fiber at 25°C under the specified conditions.

Cordless operation is useful when the cleaver must be moved between workstations or operated where an AC outlet is not immediately available. For RFID communication, PC connection, mode transfer, and related software management, use the appropriate external power configuration.

The CT-110 weighs approximately 810 g without batteries, while the CT-111 weighs approximately 850 g without batteries. Both units measure approximately 140 x 106 x 103.5 mm, excluding protrusions.
