Description

Fujikura ELCT2-16 Fusion Splicer Replacement Electrodes

Fujikura ELCT2-16 Fusion Splicer Replacement Electrodes are consumable components for compatible legacy Fujikura fusion splicers. Supplied as a matched pair, the electrodes generate the controlled electrical arc used to heat and fuse prepared optical fiber end-faces.

The ELCT2-16 is identified for selected Fujikura FSM-16 and FSM-30 Series fusion splicers. Compatibility must be verified using the complete splicer model and the marking on the existing electrodes before ordering.

The ELCT2-16 should not automatically be substituted with the later ELCT2-16B electrode model. Although the designations are similar, each electrode model supports specific Fujikura splicer generations and configurations.

Matched Replacement Electrodes for Legacy Fujikura Splicers

  • Matched electrode pair: Includes two replacement electrodes for balanced installation.
  • Legacy splicer compatibility: Designed for selected Fujikura FSM-16S, FSM-16R, and FSM-30R models.
  • Controlled arc discharge: Proper installation helps maintain stable and consistent fiber heating.
  • Model-specific design: Electrode dimensions and compatibility must match the complete splicer model.
  • Routine maintenance component: Electrode inspection and replacement form part of preventive fusion splicer maintenance.
  • Arc calibration required: Complete the applicable electrode stabilization and arc-calibration procedures after installation.

Compatible Fujikura Fusion Splicers

The Fujikura ELCT2-16 electrode pair is identified for selected models in the following fusion splicer families:

  • Fujikura FSM-16S
  • Fujikura FSM-16R
  • Fujikura FSM-30R

This compatibility information applies specifically to the ELCT2-16 model without the B suffix. Verify the complete fusion splicer model, equipment generation, and existing electrode designation before installation.

ELCT2-16 and ELCT2-16B Are Different Models

The ELCT2-16 is associated with selected legacy Fujikura FSM-16 and FSM-30 fusion splicers.

The later ELCT2-16B is used with a different range of Fujikura fusion splicers, including selected 31S, 41S, 35S, 45S, 88 Series, and 90 Series models.

Do not select an electrode based only on the 16 mm designation. Confirm the complete part number, including any letter suffix, because ELCT2-16 and ELCT2-16B should not be treated as interchangeable.

Why Electrode Condition Matters

Fusion splicer electrodes operate under repeated high-voltage arc discharges. Each splice gradually wears the electrode tips. Arc power, electrode gap, fiber type, splice mode, fusion-chamber cleanliness, and environmental conditions can affect electrode performance and service life.

Worn or contaminated electrodes may contribute to unstable arc discharge, unsuccessful arc calibration, inconsistent fiber heating, unusual splice appearance, recurring fusion errors, or changes in estimated splice loss.

The fusion splicer’s arc counter provides useful maintenance guidance, but the physical condition of the electrodes and actual fusion performance should also be considered.

Electrode Replacement and Arc Calibration

Turn off the fusion splicer before removing or installing electrodes. Follow the applicable Fujikura operating and maintenance instructions, and avoid touching the pointed electrode tips with fingers or tools.

Replace both electrodes together as a matched pair. Combining one new electrode with one worn electrode may create uneven arc geometry and inconsistent fiber heating.

Confirm that both electrodes are correctly seated and secured before operating the fusion splicer. After installation, complete the electrode stabilization and arc-calibration procedures specified for the equipment.

Electrode replacement is also an appropriate time to inspect and clean the V-grooves, fiber clamps, mirrors, objective lenses, electrode holders, wind protector, and surrounding fusion chamber.

Signs That Electrode Maintenance May Be Required

  • Repeated arc-calibration failures
  • Unstable or visibly inconsistent fusion arcs
  • Electrode maintenance or replacement notifications
  • Visible contamination, pitting, or damage on the electrode tips
  • Unexpected changes in estimated splice loss
  • Inconsistent fiber heating or unusual splice appearance
  • Recurring splice errors after fiber preparation has been verified
  • Electrode count reaching the replacement interval specified for the splicer

Fujikura ELCT2-16 Compatibility Guide

Fusion Splicer Compatibility Guidance
Fujikura FSM-16S Verify the existing electrode marking before ordering
Fujikura FSM-16R Verify the existing electrode marking before ordering
Fujikura FSM-30R Verify the complete model and installed electrode type

Electrode Selection Guidance

Select ELCT2-16 only when this exact electrode designation is specified for the fusion splicer.

For later Fujikura models that specify ELCT2-16B, do not order the ELCT2-16 without the B suffix. Provide the complete splicer model if the existing electrode marking is missing or unreadable.
